ASTM A653 Galvanized Steel

ASTM A653 Galvanized Steel Standards

Free download A653 pdf

Abstract

This specification covers steel sheet, zinc-coated (galvanized) or zinc-iron alloy-coated (galvannealed) by the hot-dip process in coils and cut lengths. The material is available in several designations as follows: commercial steel, forming steel, deep drawing steel, extra deep drawing steel, structural steel, high strength low alloy steel, high strength low alloy steel with improved formability, solution hardened steel, and bake hardenable steel. Structural steel, high strength low alloy steel, solution hardened steel, and bake hardenable steel are available in several grades based on mechanical properties. Yield strength, elongation, and bending properties of the steel shall be determined. A bend test shall be done to the coated sheets.

This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. It is informational only and not an official part of the standard; the full text of the standard itself must be referred to for its use and application. ASTM does not give any warranty express or implied or make any representation that the contents of this abstract are accurate, complete or up to date.

1. Scope

1.1 This specification covers steel sheet, zinc-coated (galvanized) or zinc-iron alloy-coated (galvannealed) by the hot-dip process in coils and cut lengths.

1.2 The product is produced in various zinc or zinc-iron alloy-coating weights [masses] or coating designations as shown in Table 1 and in Table S2.1.

(A) The coating designation is the term by which the minimum triple spot, total both sides coating weight [mass] is specified. Because of the many variables and changing conditions that are characteristic of continuous hot-dip coating lines, the zinc or zinc-iron alloy coating is not always evenly divided between the two surfaces of a coated sheet; nor is it always evenly distributed from edge to edge. However, the minimum triple-spot average coating weight (mass) on any one side shall not be less than 40 % of the single-spot requirement.
(B) As it is an established fact that the atmospheric corrosion resistance of zinc or zinc-iron alloy-coated sheet products is a direct function of coating thickness (weight (mass)), the selection of thinner (lighter) coating designations will result in almost linearly reduced corrosion performance of the coating. For example, heavier galvanized coatings perform adequately in bold atmospheric exposure whereas the lighter coatings are often further coated with paint or a similar barrier coating for increased corrosion resistance. Because of this relationship, products carrying the statement “meets ASTM A653/A653Mrequirements” should also specify the particular coating designation.
(C) International Standard, ISO 3575, continuous hot-dip zinc-coated carbon steel sheet contains Z100 and Z200 designations and does not specify a ZF75 coating.
(D) No minimum means that there are no established minimum requirements for triple- and single-spot tests.
1.3 Product furnished under this specification shall conform to the applicable requirements of the latest issue of Specification A924/A924M, unless otherwise provided herein.

1.4 The product is available in a number of designations, grades and classes in four general categories that are designed to be compatible with different application requirements.

1.4.1 Steels with mandatory chemical requirements and typical mechanical properties.

1.4.2 Steels with mandatory chemical requirements and mandatory mechanical properties.

1.4.3 Steels with mandatory chemical requirements and mandatory mechanical properties that are achieved through solid-solution or bake hardening.

1.5 This specification is applicable to orders in either inch-pound units (as A653) or SI units (as A653M). Values in inch-pound and SI units are not necessarily equivalent. Within the text, SI units are shown in brackets. Each system shall be used independently of the other.

1.6 The text of this specification references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes, excluding those in tables and figures, shall not be considered as requirements of this specification.

1.7 Unless the order specifies the “M” designation (SI units), the product shall be furnished to inch-pound units.

1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

What is Galvalume (Aluzinc) Steel?

What is Galvalume (Aluzinc) Steel?

The Hot Dip Galvalume Steel Coil/Sheet is a kind of coated steel coil/sheet. With the cold rolled steel of different strength and thickness as substrate, it is produced through applying Al-Zn coat on both faces by hot dip process. In its coating, Al accounts for about 55%, Si 1.6%, while the remaining is Zn. It enjoys both the physical protective feature and durability of Al and the electrochemical protective property of Zn. And its surface has bright silver color and regular embossed-like figure, which are highly decorative

Application:

Roofing and siding applications
Unexposed automotive parts
Appliances
Furniture
Outdoor cabinetry
Computer cases
Gutters
Pipes

What is the Benefit of Galvalume?

With Galvalume, the aluminum and zinc act together to resist corrosion and provide barrier protection on the roofing surface.  That is, it resists rust and resists cracking and peeling from weather.  It also resists cracking and peeling from the roll-forming process when the corrugated panels are formed.

Zinc alone could rust more, while aluminum alone may not resist hail and other damaging forces as well. Galvalume is thus likely to last longer in most situations (unpainted, about 30-40 years).  Lasting longer, of course, means it saves you money long term, since you won’t have to worry about maintenance and replacement as soon.  (It’s also relatively inexpensive at the outset compared to other long-lasting roofing options.)

Galvalume is versatile.  It’s fairly easy to install, even over existing surfaces, andlightweight.  It suits both in structural and architectural needs.  (For low-slope or flat roofs, structural is used.)  Unpainted GALVALUME requires less upkeep than other surfaces and is therefore sought in many commercial applications.  It is sometimes used unpainted for residential roofs, too, but can be painted to match any architectural styling.  It can even be formed and stamped to look like tile or shingle.

Galvalume steel can also help keep utility use and costs down.  It reflects the hot sun off the surface during the summer, allowing much less heat to enter into the underlying building and thus requiring less cooling effort.  It also reflects cool air back into the structure.  In the winter, it does just the opposite, keeping the heat of the building reflected back into itself.  Not only does this energy efficiency help save you money, but it’s also better for the environment.  It’s also better for the environment that it will not need to be torn off and disposed of as soon as other roofs likely would, and that most steel can be recycled.

As you can see, Galvalume is a great choice for your roofing material.  Its many benefits make it a favorite

What is Galvanized Steel?

Galvanized steel is steel that has gone through a chemical process to keep it from corroding. The steel gets coated in layers of zinc oxide because this protective metal does not get rusty as easily. The coating also gives the steel a more durable, hard to scratch finish that many people find attractive. For countless outdoor, marine, or industrial applications, galvanized steel is an essential fabrication component.

Benefits of Galvanization

Zinc protects steel in two ways. First, it is highly resistant to rust; iron, a major component of steel, reacts very easily with oxygen and moisture and will eventually disintegrate. The layer of zinc on the surface prevents those elements from reaching the steel so quickly. It also develops a patina — a layer of zinc oxides, salts, and other compounds — that offers further protection. Zinc is also extremely durable and scratch resistant, and has a satiny appearance that many find attractive.

The outer layer also protects the steel by acting as a "sacrificial layer." If, for some reason, rust does take hold on the surface of galvanized steel, the zinc will get corroded first. Even in areas where the surface is scratched or damaged, the surrounding zinc will still corrode before the steel does. The lifespan of galvanized steel varies, but industrial steel with a 3.9 mil (0.0039 inches or 0.09906 mm) thick coating can last more than 70 years without maintenance under average conditions.

Uses

Galvanized steel can be found almost everywhere. Many individuals live in steel frame houses, and buildings are often made with galvanized steel roofs. There are multiple steel parts in cars that help protect them from the weather, and it's used in many marine applications due to its ability to withstand the salt and the elements. Besides being inexpensive, durable and effective, this metal is also popular because it can be recycled and reused multiple times.

Galvanized and Galvalume! What is the difference

What is the difference of Galvanized and Galvalume?

1. Galvanized: Surface of galvanized steel evenly distributed the layer of zinc materials, which plays the role of anodic protection for base material, that means corrosion of zinc material give the protection of the base material , and only when all the zinc coating is corroded ,can harm done to the base metal inside.

2.Galvalume: Galvalume coating surface is made from 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc and a little amount of other elements. Galvalume coating is of a honeycomb structure under microscopic circumstance .The “honeycomb”, which is made of aluminum, contains all the zinc .In this case, the galvalume coating also plays the role of anodic protection, but with the decrease of the zinc amount, and the zinc material covered by aluminum, the anodic protection reduced greatly. So once the galvalume steel sheets are cut, the cutting edge without protection will soon be corroded. So should galvalume sheets be cut less, and zinc-rich paint or anti-rust paint applied to the cutting edge could be able to increase the life of the steel sheets.

3. The different
3.1 Surface:  The surface of galvalume sheet is more beautiful than galvanized sheet, while the galvalume sheet is more expensive than galvanized sheet, and now the customer like the small spangle than regular spangle

3.2 Corroision: In a rainy and humid city, once corrosion occurs at some point on galvalume sheet, it will spread increasingly on whole board if you do not take measures timely to slowly rust; while galvanized rust not spread if it occurs at a point.

Even a galvalume with greatest quality cannot overcome this shortcoming. Therefore, when we propose customers of the galvanized products, we will explain to customers the difference between them, if they require galvalume products, then we can only try to use corrosion paint immediately once it is cut.
